Best Damn Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes

Use your air fryer to make roasted sweet potatoes in only 10-12 minutes. Seasoned with a little bit of brown sugar and cinnamon, these little heavenly morsels are a huge hit with everyone!

The air fryer comes through again with another easy-to-make, awesome recipe! I’ll be honest, when I first heard of air fryers I figured they’d be just for frozen chicken nuggets and french fries. Well that couldn’t be further from the truth! My air fryer gets a workout several times a week making a huge variety of delicious recipes that aren’t even “fried”. Roasted sweet potatoes are one of my favorite things to make and the air fryer is absolutely perfect for the task.

Sweet potatoes are naturally packed with great flavor. What makes them even better? A little brown sugar, some cinnamon and just a bit of salt. Yep, that’s it. Oh, and of course a little olive oil. Even though air fryers don’s don’t actually “deep fry” you still need a little oil to get things going.

For this recipe we use about 1.5lbs of cut up sweet potatoes. That equals about 2-3 regular sweet potatoes. A little more or a little less is just fine. They key is, we don’t want to overcrowd the air fryer. If you want to make a larger amount, that’s fine, just do it in batches. We want the sweet potatoes to cover the basket or tray in a single layer. This allows for optimal results.

Preparation is about as easy as it gets. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut into chunks of around 1 inch in size. Again, no need to be perfect here. I usually just cut thick slices from the potatoes and then cut those slices into quarters or into 6 chunks. Then place all the chunks into a bowl, add the olive oil, and coat them well with the cinnamon, brown sugar and salt. Make sure to have everything coated well.

Preheat the air fryer for 5 minutes at 400°(F). Then place the sweet potato chunks into the basket or onto the tray (single layer as best you can), and set the unit to the “air fry” setting for 10 minutes at 400°(F). Halfway through the cooking time, gives the basket a good shake to move the potatoes around. If using a tray style air fryer, use a spatula or tongs to move/flip the potatoes as best you can. After cooking time is up, check potatoes for doneness. You can always add another couple of minutes for desired results.

The short answer is: no, you don’t. Soaking potatoes in water first will remove some of the starch and allow the potatoes to crisp up more. However, it’s a step I don’t bother with and still get amazing results. The brown sugar will naturally caramelize, creating a nice crust on the potatoes. Sweet potatoes don’t need to be crunchy, they just need to be roasted to tender perfection.

The answer is definitely: yes! Want to just enjoy the taste of pure roasted sweet potatoes? Leave the seasoning out all together. Just use the olive oil and the same time and temp. Sweet potatoes have such a great natural flavor on their own and are excellent with no seasonings at all.
